Homeopathic & Ayurvedic doctors welcome SC order
On 9th July, 2015, Homeopathy and
Ayurveda practitioners welcomed the Supreme Court order which dismissed the
Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
This SLP sought to restrain Homeopathic and Ayurvedic doctors from prescribing
Allopathic medicines.
In June 2014, the State Assembly and
the Legislative Council gave its approval to the bill which allowed Homeopaths
to practice Allopathy after completing a one-year bridge course in
Pharmacology. However, the IMA moved the Bombay High Court over the issue and
also questioned the State Cabinet's decision to allow Unani and Ayurveda
practitioners to legally prescribe allopathic medicines and perform minor
surgeries.
After the Bombay High Court denied
interim relief in its order of 24th December, 2015, the IMA filed a SLP on the
issue in the Apex Court. The IMA sought a stay on the amendments made by the
State Assembly in the Maharashtra Medical Council Act and the Maharashtra Medical
Practitioners' Act. However, the Supreme Court dismissed the SLP.
While welcoming the decision, Dr.
Bahubali Shah, Chief of the Maharashtra Homeopathy Practitioners Association,
and Dr. Suhas Parchure, former Chief of the National Integrated Medical
Association, said that it would benefit over 60,000 Homeopaths and over 80,000
Ayurveda practitioners in Maharashtra. Parchure further said that the bridge
course should be eliminated.
In a statement issued on 9th July,
2015, Medical Development Forum Convenor Dr. S Sardeshmukh said that by
dismissing the petition, the Supreme Court had helped to justify the Ayurvedic
and Homeopathic practitioners' stand of being able to practice integrated
medicine.
Dr. Jayesh Lele, Chief (elect) of the
state unit of the IMA said that they had not received the copy of the order and
would be able to give comments only after reading it.
